Skin Pigment Spots

The discovery of skin pigment spots can be a major setback for people who wish to achieve and maintain beautiful skin. Skin pigment spots occur naturally and, in most cases, do not pose any harm to a person's overall health. Typically, age spots and birthmarks, the two most common types of skin pigment spots, are the most noticeable of skin blemishes and are most often removed for cosmetic reasons.

Age Spots

Age spots are a type of skin blemish treated often at our Edison practice. Also known as liver spots, age spots are typically areas of brown pigmentation that gradually appear on the skin as a person ages. They can develop on nearly any part of the body, including the arms, hands, face, legs, feet, and back. Age spots most often resemble large freckles and can range from faint beige to dark brown.

Though age spots do not represent a danger to health, they can still be an aesthetic distraction from the other features. Age spots can become even more noticeable when they develop concurrently with other skin conditions, including skin laxity and wrinkles.

Due to genetics, some people are simply more likely to developing age spots than others. People with relatives who have developed age spots have a higher likelihood of developing these spots of pigment. Those who are exposed often to the sun's harmful rays also have a better chance of having age spots appear. Sun exposure, however, can also increase the risk of developing melanoma, so patients noticing the development of age spots that have peculiar edges and blotchy coloration should have the blemishes examined by a certified dermatologist.

Birthmarks

Birthmarks are skin pigment spots that, unlike age spots, are formed before birth. They can appear in a number of colors, including beige, brown, black, red, pink, and blue. Birthmarks can appear in a number of forms as well, including as moles, port-wine stains, Mongolian spots, and strawberry marks. After the initial consultation, Dr. Elber will be able to recommend the ideal treatment plan for eliminating or minimizing birthmarks.
