Understanding Lipiflow Dry Eye Therapy

Did you know that you have small glands that line the edges of your eyelids? These are your meibomian glands, and they have an important job: They secrete oil, which then coats the surfaces of your eyes. This oil, along with water, makes up your tear film, which lubricates your eyes and also supports your ability to see.

If these glands don’t function properly, you might experience dry eyes, blurry vision, watery eyes, itchiness, discomfort, or a combination of these symptoms. Known as meibomian gland dysfunction, this condition is a major source of dry eye syndrome. If your dry eye symptoms are caused by a dysfunction in your meibomian glands, LipiFlow therapy may be able to help you.

Our providers at Bellmawr Eye Care, in Bellmawr, New Jersey, rely on LipiFlow dry eye therapy to treat meibomian gland dysfunction. In this blog, we share how this treatment works and how it can help you overcome dry eye syndrome.

What is LipiFlow therapy and how does it work?

Instead of adding lubrication to your eyes like eye drops do, LipiFlow therapy combats the symptoms of dry eye syndrome by removing blockages from your meibomian glands. By removing the blockages, the oil that comes from these glands can then flow and lubricate your eyes.

LipiFlow therapy relies on thermal pulsation. The system, in part, involves two devices that look like contact lenses. One of them slides under your eyelid, and the other sits on the outside of your eyelid. These two parts, which are single-use and sterile, release heat energy and provide massaging action, and together they help to liquefy and release any blockages in your meibomian glands.

Treatments are relatively quick, lasting about 12 minutes. Depending on your case, you may only need one treatment. After the blockages have been removed, your glands will start to resume their normal oil production.

Is it safe and effective?

LipiFlow therapy is safe. In fact, it’s FDA-approved for treating meibomian gland dysfunction. And, not only is it safe, but it’s also effective. Studies show that the treatment is more effective at treating meibomian gland dysfunction than taking doxycycline tablets, which are sometimes used to treat meibomian gland dysfunction.

Is LipiFlow right for you?

Meibomian gland dysfunction is common, and you might suspect you have it if you have:

The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus recommends warm compresses, gentle eyelid massage, and dietary supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids as potential at-home treatments. However, if at-home treatments don’t provide the relief you need, we can help you. Our team can confirm the source of your dye eyes and determine if LipiFlow is right for you.
